In addition to Orlando and Mineola tangelos, California also grows several
varieties of Mandarins. These include Kinnows, Fairchilds, and Satsumas.
All three look like small, tight-skinned tangerines. As a rule, the California
Mandarins have a higher skin color than those grown in Florida. (This deeper
skin color is also true of California oranges.) However, most California
Mandarins have a slightly tart flavor. I am told that this tartness is due
to the practice of grafting Mandarin buds on lemon tree stock.
