The Mclntosh is a very juicy, tender-fleshed variety. It is grown inmost apple-growing areas. Unlike the Red and Golden Delicious, which areat their best when grown in the Northwest, the best Macs are produced inthe Midwest and Northeast. The Mac is fine for eating out of hand, but itis not one of our better cooking or baking apples. Applesauce made fromMacs almost has the texture of baby food. They cook up too soft to use inpies because the slices dissolve, and when baked whole in the oven theymelt and collapse.
