This variety, which is America's favorite, is grown in most of the apple-producing
areas of the nation. However, the best and biggest crops are grown in the
Pacific Northwest. Washington State easily ranks as the top apple producer,
and most of the apples grown in that state are Red Delicious.
Although the Red Delicious is our best-selling apple, it has some shortcomings.
As far as appearance (looks, color, and shape), it has no peer. Though while
it is long on looks, it falls a bit short on flavor and texture. Many less-popular
varieties are tastier. The Red Delicious is only fair on flavor when eaten
raw and is a very poor cooking or baking apple. Early in the season, the
Red Delicious tends to eat woody. Late in the season it tends to eat mushy.
Many consumers who insist that an apple isn't an apple unless it has a red
skin are missing out on our excellent yellow and green-skinned varieties.
