The Forelle is another miniature variety. While it is as pretty as a
picture, this petite, shapely, freckled, red-checked pear is not very flavorful.
At best it has a bland, sweet flavor and is quite firm even when ripe. At
worst, and this happens quite often, it is very astringent. You can't tell
by its appearance but must wait until you bite into a Forelle to know whether
the fruit is sweet or puckery. Forelles are primarily used in fruit decorations,
usually with lady apples, or to add color to fruit baskets.
