Seckels, an American product, are the smallest of the pear varieties.
The first Seckel pear tree was discovered growing near the Delaware River
in Pennsylvania around 1800. These pears are a dull olive-green in color
and often sport a red cheek. While they originated in the East, those grown
in that area of the country (mostly New York and Michigan) are much smaller
and usually more woody than those grown on the West Coast. The western Seckel
is one of our tastiest as well as one of our most expensive pears.
Western Seckels are in the market from September through January.
