SANTA CLAUS MELON

The Santa Claus melon got its name because at one time, prior to our importing melons from Spain, Israel, and Chile, it was the only melon that was in market during the Christmas season. It is large, dark and light green striped, and shaped like an oversized football. The texture and the color of the flesh is similar to that of a honeydew, but it is firmer and not as sweet. It isn't as bad as a casaba or a Juan Canary, but it's not in the same league as the honeydew, cantaloupe, or crenshaw.
