MACADAM IAS
· Macadamias are one of Hawaii's signature crops, but California grows
plenty of them, too. In fact, the Australian native has been cultivated
in California for as long as it has been in Hawaii: the first trees were
planted in both places in 1888. Today, three of the original California
trees are still living.
· Nothing matches the lush flavor and texture of macadamias, especially
when roasted, chopped, and sprinkled over a tropical salad of mangoes, guavas,
red bananas, and star fruit. Chop them fine for a luxurious substitute for
bread crumbs to use to coat fillets of sole or thinly pounded chicken breasts.
And they're delicious in baked goods.
·Macadamias top the scales, at 199 calories and 21 grams fat per ounce-95
