This is a fairly new variety. They look like miniature English peas, have bright dark green pods, and are chock full of medium-sized peas. Unlike English peas, which have inedible pods, but like the snow peas, every bit of the sugar snap is usable. They are also excellent when eaten raw. Sugar snaps are available twelve months of the year and usually sell for prices that are comparable to the going rate for snow peas. While they have yet to be accepted by the Oriental trade as a substitute for snow peas, the sugar snaps are very popular with Western customers. Although there is little similarity in appearance, eggplant, peppers, white potatoes, and tomatoes belong to the same botanical family that is known as the nightshade.
