Watercress is an aquatic plant grown along stream banks. Its small green leaves have a sharp, pungent, peppery flavor. Watercress is used as a garnish as well as in salads. In England, no afternoon tea is complete without watercress sandwiches. However, it is very perishable. Purchase it only if it looks very green and fresh and store it in your refrigerator. Watercress is always sold in small bunches and usually at moderate prices.
