Chassagne-Montrachet
The modest village of Chassagne, grouped around a few winding streets,
glories at the presence within its boundaries of almost half of the great
vineyard of Montrachet. This field of about 8 hectares (20 acres) produces
the greatest of all white burgundies, a majestic wine with a splendid concentration
in both its rich perfume and its noble, complex taste. Nearly half of Le
Montrachet, surrounded by a low wall and marked by a number of stone gateways,
lies in Chassagne. The village also has a share in the Grand Cru Batard-Montrachet,
the birthplace of similarly brilliant white wines. One very small Grand
Cru lies within Chassagne-Montrachet. Criots-Batard-Montrachet has an average
annual production of only 70 hecto litres - 5,000 bottles of wine. Besides
these Grands Crus the Premiers Crus from this commune can also be of impressive
depth and distinction. Chassagne-Montrachet produces considerably more red
than white wine. The red wines do not in general reach the exalted level
of the whites, though they can give a good deal of pleasure. In style they
vary from richly colored and firm to light red and smooth drinking.
