POMMARD is unaccountably the best-known and most sought-after
commune of the whole Cote. Unaccountably, because the commune wine is not
outstanding, and there is no single vineyard with a world-wide reputation.
Most critics of burgundy find Pommard the slight leveling off between the
high-points of Volnay and Beaune. But what should not be ignored is the
individual growers. In Burgundy the grower counts as much as the vineyard;
the saying goes 'there are no great wines; only great bottles of wine'.
Pommard's most prestigious vineyard is the lower part of Les Rugiens above
the village. One of the best cuvees of the Hospices de Beaune, Dames de
la Charite´, is made from Rugiens and Epenots (combined). Clos de la
Commaraine is the monopoly of the famous firm of Jaboulet-Vercherre. These
are among the great Pommards; medium-weight wines but with the lovely savory
character of the best burgundy.
