MACONNAIS

The Maconnais produces three times more white wine than the rest of Burgundy put together and, although it never quite matches the heights of quality achieved in the Cote d'Or, it is easily the best-value pure Chardonnay wine in the world.

THE MACONNAISS IS AN ANCIENT viticultural area that was renowned as long as 1,600 years ago when Ausonius, the Roman poet of St.-Emilion, mentioned its wines. Today it makes sense to couple it with the Beaujolais because, while Chardonnay is the dominant white grape in both districts (as it is in the rest of Burgundy), the Gamay is the dominant black grape, which it is not elsewhere, this forms a natural link between the two. Conceived as one large district, the Maconnais can be seen as its essentially white wine area and the Beaujolais as its almost entirely red wine area.
