Rhone
Rhone wines have been growing in popularity for several reasons:
Favorable attention from the wine press. Rhone wines continue to receive
considerable coverage in magazines and wine newsletters. Robert Parker was
one of the first to point out the great wines that the Rhone has to offer.
Many of the wines have received very high ratings, comparable to those of
the best that Bordeaux and Burgundy have achieved. Most Rhone wines still
represent excellent price/quality values. Serious interest in Rhone wines
began almost as a cult following ten or fifteen years ago, but has now found
a wide and ever expanding audience. New flavors and tastes run the gamut
from the most full bodied and powerful to fresh and very fruity wines. These
wines marry well with the very popular Mediterranean and California cuisine.
California climate is similar to Rhone valley. Many of the best Rhone varietals
are now being planted in California, due to the popularity of Rhone wines,
and the fact that they grow so well here.
