Boston lettuce is also known as butterhead lettuce. While it has a fairly large head, it isn't nearly as solid as iceberg lettuce. The leaves are pale green and are loose, soft, and thin. Since it is easy to separate whole leaves from the head, this variety is often used as a bed or a boat for serving other foods. Boston lettuce usually sells at moderate prices.
