LEAF LETTUCE


Leaf lettuce, which doesn't form a compact head, is also known as saladbowl lettuce. For years it has been a favorite of home gardeners, but onlyrecently has it been grown commercially on a large scale. Leaf lettuce hasbeen very well received at the produce stands and by the restaurant trade.It has a mild flavor and a fairly crisp texture. There are several varietiesof leaf lettuce. It is usually green, but a reddish variety is rapidly gainingfavor. Leaf lettuce is highly prized in Latin American neighborhoods, whereit is called lechuga. It usually sells at moderate prices at all producestands.
