Cote de Nuits
In Chambolle-Musigny, the next village from Vougeot, the soil becomes
lighter as clay gives way to limestone. As a result the wines are the finest
and most delicate of the whole Cote de Nuits. The Grand Cru Le Musigny offers
the utmost in finesse. This wine was poetically described by Gaston Roupnel
as being "of silk and lace"; and its perfume put him in mind of
the scents of "a damp garden, a rose and a violet covered in morning
dew." A white Musigny is also produced but this does not reach the
class of the red. The other Grand Cru here is Bonnes Mares (a small part
of which belongs to the neighboring commune of Morey-St. Denis). This field
gives a rather more rounded wine, with more reserve when young than Le Musigny.
With the years, however, this great burgundy also becomes delicate and soft.
That Chambolle-Musigny's Premiers Crus can also have charm and allure is
shown by such names as Les Amoureuses and Les Charmes. The village of Chambolle
is certainly worth a quiet stroll for its atmosphere of rather reticent
prosperity.
