Cote de Nuits and Hautes-Cotes de Nuits
Firmness and weight are the key words here, and these characteristics generally
intensive as the vineyards progress north. Production is essentially red,
and with 22 of Burgundy's 23 red Grands Crus, the Cote de Nuits is the place
par excellence for the Pinot noir.
THE COTE DE NUITS IS THE NORTHERN section of the Cote d Or, the departmental
name that has been coined by the cotes of Nuits and Beaune. With a string
of villages owning some of the richest names in Burgundy- Gevrey-Chambertin,
Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanee and Nuits-St.-Georges, these slopes ring
up dollar signs in the minds of merchants throughout the world.
CONFRERE DES CHEVALIERS DU TASTEVIN
After the three terrible vintages of 1930, 1931 and 1932, and four years
of world slump, Camille Rodier and Georges Faiveley formed the Confrerie
des Chevaliers du Tastevin in a bid to revive Burgundy's fortunes. They
fashioned their initiative on the Ordre de la Boisson, a fraternity that
had flourished, and died. during the reign of Louis XlV Adopting colorful
medieval robes and various dramatic rituals, then created four ranks: Chevalier,
Commandeur, and Grand Officier and named the brotherhood after the traditional
Burgundian tastevin: a shallot, dimpled, silver tasting cup with a fluted
edge. This object dates from the sixteenth century and is worn around the
neck, supported by, a scarlet and gold ribbon, as part of the Chevaliers'
attire.
The first investiture took place on 16 November 1934 in a cellar in Nuits-St.-Georges;
the Confrerie now boasts thousands of members in numerous foreign chapters
and averages 20 banquets a year at Chateau du Clos de Vougeot. Up to 600
members and their guests are subjected to five hours of feast and festivity.
