Cote de Nuits
Gevrey-Chambertin is by far the biggest wine commune of the Cote de Nuits.
The village center lies a few hundred metres west of the route nationale,
but there is also a sizable settlement around the main road. The quality
of the wines produced here varies a good deal, because wine from a considerable
area of flat land east of the N74 comes under the appellation Gevrey-Chambertin
(see map). The Grands Crus, however, have a very good reputation, with Chambertin
and Chambertin Clos de Beze to the fore. Both fields - of about the same
size - yield formidable, strong burgundies that need long aging in bottle
to reach their best. Six other Grands Crus can add the name of Chambertin
to their own: Chapelle Chambertin, Charmes-Chambertin (more wine than from
the other five together), Griotte-Chambertin, Latricieres-Chambertin, Mazis
Chambertin and Ruchottes-Chambertin. Clos St-Jacques is one of the very
best Premiers Crus.
