St.-Pe´ray

Nearly opposite Valence, slightly to the north on the right bank of the Rhone, the vineyard of St. Peray is charged with history. Praised by Plutarch, the cellar of the Roman centurions, it was extended to include the lands of the village of Toulaud, thanks to Henry IV and his love of good things. Since then its fame has not ceased to grow. Here too the vines used are Roussanne and Marsanne. St. Peray is naturally a still wine, but since 1929 it has been for the greater part made into sparkling wine, and certain connoisseurs go as far as to compare it with champagne.
