The northern Rhone consists of dramatic steep terraced granite slopes
covered with vineyards overlooking the Rhone river. Where as the southern
Rhone has a high production in lighter, more approachable wines, the north
is a concentration of "grande" vines producing more serious wines
that improve with age. Even the white and sparkling wines tend to be more
serious. Where the southern Rhone red wines are dominated by Grenache,
they all tend to be blends of more than one varietal. In the northern Rhone,
Syrah dominates and demands serious cellar attention
