TAVEL

Philip the Fair said long ago the one good wine is the blush wine of Tavel. Francois I, Louis XIV held it in the highest esteem. Ronsard, Balzac and Brillat Savarin sang its praises. Situated on the soil of the Gard, on a harsh plain beyond the Rhone to the south west of Orange, the vineyard is planted principally with grenache and clairette, together with some cinsault. picpoul and bourboulenc. It travels well and was one of the first to conquer the Americas. Its strength ensures a full bloom when two or three years old but most prefer it young and fresh still rich with all the scents of its native moors.
