A Spanish variety grown extensively in southern France and Californiaproducing table wine. One of the Carignan's synonyms Mataro, is the commonname for the Mouvedre. This is also widely planted in southern France andprovides a similar well colored, harsh wine, though they are not the samevariety, a Carignan blanc and a Carignan gris also exist.
