An excellent-quality grape variety that has been used more than other
lesser varieties in Chateauneuf-du-Pape blends in recent years. It is grown
extensively throughout the Rhone and the Midi of France, and, under the
name of the Mataro, in Spain. The Mataro is Australia's fifth widest cultivated
black grape, but is a declining force in southern California.
