Famous for its production of Barolo, this grape is also responsible,in part or whole, for the other splendid wines of Piemonte in Italy, suchas Gattinara, Barbaresco, Carema and Donnaz. It often needs to be softenedby the addition of Bonarda grapes which have the same role as Merlot inBordeaux. In fact, Merlot is used in Lombardy to soften Nebbiolo grapesfor the production of Valtelina and Valtelina Superiore wines, of whichSassella can be the most velvety of all.
