Flavanoids

Flavonoids are a large family of compounds synthesized by plants that have a common chemical structure. Flavonoids may be further divided into subclasses (see table 1 - Linus Pauling Institute). Over the past decade, scientists have become increasingly interested in the potential for various dietary flavonoids to explain some of the health benefits associated with fruit- and vegetable-rich diets.

Several experimental and clinical studies have shown that alpha lipoic acid has potential therapeutic uses in diabetes, atherosclerosis, cataracts, heavy metal poisoning, neuro-degenerative diseases, and HIV infection.

Soy Isoflavones

Flavonoids known to inhibit thyroid enzyme activity:
These flavonoids include kaempferol (found in apples, onions, green tea), naringenin (found in citrus fruits), and quercetin (found in fruits and berries). Such compounds are widely distributed in plant-derived foods and are consumed at relatively high levels (up to 1 gram or more per day) by vegetarians and vegans. Despite this, vegetarian diets have not been linked with decreased thyroid function.
